Map of City of Londonderry 1856

This is a copy of the 1856 revision of the 1833 six inch Ordnance Survey map for the county which was used by Griffith's valuers, hence the numbers on the map in the rural areas outside the built up area. If you compare it to the 1833 map you will see little change. Within the townland of Edenballymore, to the north of the city, there is a little expansion in the suburbs - Great James Street now appears on the map but there are few houses on it as yet. There is some expansion of the docks northwards. The areas to the south of the walled city look virtually the same as they did on the 1833 map. The population of the city doubled between 1851 and 1901 and the results of that growth can be seen on the later 1905 map.
