Sources used in researching a locality

If your main interest is local history, then you will want to use sources that will help you to find out about the history of a place and the people who lived there. Below is a diagram which suggests the range of sources and approaches that you will need to consider when you undertake a locality study. Note that I have put the 1901 and 1911 Census Returns in the centre of the diagram suggesting that this source might be the starting point of your research. However, there is no reason why you should not begin with fieldwork or visual sources such as photographs and drawings or indeed oral history and so on. I am really saying that any one of the circles in the outer ring could be moved into the centre and become the starting point of your study. The other sources in the outer ring will be drawn into your research - depending on your objectives and the questions that you are asking.
