Read this first about the 1832 Valuation William Street

1832 Townland Valuation of William Street, Londonderry

The houses in William Street [within] were surveyed and initially valued on 24th October 1832. William Street [without] was valued on 25th October 1832. I have databased most of the information which is recorded in the 1832 original manuscript valuation book for William Street [PRONI Ref. VAL/1B/547A].

Note that there are separate tables for the left and right hand sides of the street. The left side properties are arranged in geographical order from the corner of present day Waterloo Street [then Cow Bog] to present day Francis Street and the right side from the corner of Waterloo Place to present day Francis Street.

Unfortunately the valuation book [VAL/1B/547D] that contains the detailed information on the area of the city where William Street is situated [Edenballymore] is missing from the set. As a result I have only been able to list the occupant of each property along with its total valuation. I have added some information on occupations gleaned from Trade Directories and Dawson's Book of potential voters in the 1832 election.

The notes column indicates the various street corners and the points where other streets cut across William Street. Note that the area between Mary Blue's Burn and Rossville Street/James's Street is open space in 1832. Note also that Mary Blue's Burn is the city limit at that time - thus the William Street [within] and William Street [without] divide. The former was in the townland of Londonderry and the latter in the townland of Edenballymore. This [within/without] divide lasted until the end of the nineteenth century. It disappeared with the introduction of new wards after the County Council Act of 1898.

The notes column also indicates those buildings where I have been able to establish a direct link between the name listed for a particular property 1832 and the name listed for the same property in 1859.
