| [No. 18] was in the hands of Mary Milliken
(Publican) and John Blair (Greengrocer) in 1901. Neither of
them lived on the premises. Mary Milliken lived in Alexander
Terrace on Railway Road and I'm not sure where John Blair lived. The public house, formerly occupied by Mrs
Martha Reid between 1866 and 1877 was listed in the 1870
Slater's Directory as Agricultural Hotel, Coach & Car Proprieter & Posting House & Spirit & Porter Dealer. The
hotel extended over the upper floor of next door. By 1878 it
was in the hands of John Milliken, probably the husband of
Mary Milliken. She was listed as a widow in the 1901 Census
Returns. By 1911 Mary Milliken was still alive and living in
Alexander Terrace. Her son, Alfred and family, were living
in these premises in Church Street. By 1927 the public house was in the
hands of William John Currie.
Blair's shop on the corner of Society
Street was taken over in 1925 by Annie McAteer. The whole
building was completely rebuilt around 1930 which accounts
for its architectural appearance today. The new building had
living accommodation on the upper floors and three shops
below. The first shop next to the wine store was occupied by
W. G. Anderson & Co. (Wireless Dealers & Electrical
Contractors). The next shop was occupied by Lily Leckey
(Chemist) and the one on the corner was the The Cake Shop
owned by Letitia Liken, later The Misses Liken. All of these
shops were still there in 1967. The 1930s look of this
building can still be seen in the facade of the upper floors
today.
