Map]
| This photograph, which actually dates from the
1930s, shows [Nos. 9 & 10] sandwiched between the gable
ends of the much higher [No. 8] on the right of the photo and [No.
11] just off the left of the photo. In many ways the date
of the photograph does not matter since the appearance of these
two shops changed very little through the nineteenth and the first
half of the twentieth centuries. [No. 9] was a public house and
had been occupied by William McLaughlin since 1880. Before that
David Duff lived here and he was described in the 1870 Slater's
Directory as the owner of the Commercial Hotel, Coach & Car
Proprieter & Posting House & Spirit & Porter Dealer.
McLaughlins continued to occupy this building until circa 1937 when
it was taken over by the Maypole (Grocers). After the Maypole moved
into the Church Street part of H. & T. Bellas [No. 7] in the
1950s, it became part of
Smyth's shop [No. 8]. [No. 10] had been McGrath's butcher's
shop since 1891 and remained so until circa 1935 when it was taken
over by Alexander M. Pearson. Some time after this it became part
of Woolworth's. The gable end of [No. 11] can just be seen on the
left hand side of the photograph. It was occupied by John
Caldwell in 1906 until c.1930 when it, along with [No. 11a],
was taken over by Woolworth's who gave the two buildings a new front.
This can be seen in in the 1920s to 1960s series of photographs.
